With almost one million strays, the country faces one of Europe’s most urgent animal welfare crises. For many, life means hunger, injury, disease, and fear. For others, surviving in a cold, filthy public shelter can hardly be called a decent life.
Romania still faces one of the worst stray overpopulation issues when compared to all the Eastern and South-Eastern countries in Europe. Millions of innocent animals are condemned to suffer and die from the very moment they are born. Countless puppies succumb to starvation, disease, and violence before their eyes are properly open. But our eyes are open. We can see their suffering.
Tragically, the situation receives far less attention and media coverage when compared to countries like Greece, Turkey, and Spain. Primarily because Romania is not a major tourist destination. There are no outsiders to see the pain endured by our abandoned and abused animals. They sadly remain out of sight, out of mind, and of little interest to the international media.
The most effective—and humane—solution to control strays’ overpopulation is sterilization. ROLDA pays for sterilizations for thousands of dogs and cats each year. This is a small number by comparison, but by sterilizing one, we are saving thousands more from unnecessary suffering and death.

Coloring book is a huge success
We are proud to announce that thousands of coloring books have already been distributed for free in schools in different parts of Romania starting with 2022 and we will not stop here. We hope to print the translated version of the coloring book and distribute it outside Romania.
Many seniors in Romania live on the edge of collapse, depressed, in poverty, often being forced to choose between buying medicines or paying utility bills. Having a pet, for many, is the best thing that has happened to them. Through FriendsForever campaign, we will continue our efforts to keep seniors and their pets together for years to come.
Starting with 2022, ROLDA decided to expand our aid for animals to other small charities from Romania in danger of closing down because of financial problems caused by the COVID period, followed by the war implications, the energetic and economic crisis.
